What is a crown?

The crown of the tooth is the part that you can see above the gum line, while the roots lie below. When a natural crown is fractured or decayed and can’t be repaired by a filling, Drs. Shah or Moses will gently shape and fit an artificial crown to restore the function of the damaged tooth.

How long does a crown appointment take?

The procedure takes about 1-2 hours, similar to having a filling done. During the first visit, Drs. Shah or Moses clean and shape the tooth before placing a temporary crown. The following appointment is when she switches out the temporary for the permanent crown.

What do the procedures entail exactly?

Getting a crown is much like having a filling performed, both in the length of time and comfort level. After the decay has been removed and the tooth is reduced in size, leaving only healthy tissue, an impression is taken for creating the final crown. A second appointment is scheduled for the placement of the final crown. In the meantime, a temporary tooth is placed to protect the reduced tooth and allow for normal function.

Does it hurt to get a crown?

No. Thankfully, as with a filling and most dental procedures, local anesthesia is used to numb the area. You may naturally feel a little discomfort as the anesthesia wears off, but nothing that can’t be easily controlled with over-the-counter pain medications. Your comfort is of utmost importance to us, and we want to ensure you are comfortable during your visit.

Can I eat after having a crown?

It’s best to wait about 30 minutes after completion of your treatment before eating or drinking. We recommend you wait 24 hours before eating anything hard or sticky that might pull at the crown as the cement is setting.

How long do crowns last?

Dental crowns can last up to 20 years, depending on care, location in the mouth, and the materials used for the procedure. We’ve seen them last even longer!

How do I care for a crown?

Caring for a crown is like caring for a natural tooth. Simply brush twice and floss once daily, and make sure to keep up on your regularly scheduled cleanings with us.
